What is Acomplia?
Acomplia is registered as an anti-obesity drug.
Acomplia (rimonabant) is the forerunner among a new group of therapeutic agents known as Cannabinoid-1 Receptor Blockers (CB1).
Acomplia is indicated in the treatment of obesity and allied medical conditions.
How does Acomplia work?
Acomplia works effectively as it selectively blocksCB1 receptors that are present in the brain and in the peripheral organs that are vital because of lipid and glucose metabolism. These include liver, adipose tissue, gastrointestinal tract and muscle.
Acomplia acts effectively by switching off those brain circuits that generates a feeling of hunger in people smoking cannabis.
Acomplia by blocking the CB1 receptors contributes to the drop in the over activity of the endocannabinoid system (EC system). The physiological system called the ECsystem consists of receptors like the CB1 receptor and plays a significant role in controlling energy balance, managing lipid metabolism and regulating weight.
What is Acomplia used for?
Acompliais used side by side with diet and exercise in treating obese patients having unusual levels of fat in the blood and also suffering from Type2 diabetes.
According to Sanofi, Acomplia is quite effective in preventing cardiovascular disease risks.
Obese patients with huge waist circumference will be greatly benefitted from Acomplia therapy. Generally, women with about 88cm of waist circumference and men with almost 102cm of waist circumference are able to utilize the benefits and advantages of this drug.
Does Acomplia also aid smoking cessation?
Based on extensive studies and research carried out by sanofi-aventis over a period of a year Acomplia was considered to be a quit smoking aid as it had motivated 6,500 smokers in a year to quit the habit of smoking.
Sanofi-aventis took the initiative in the submission of a new drug application.
It led to the issue of a non approvable letter in the treatment of smoking cessation. An approvable letter thereafter was issued for Acomplia as a therapy for obesity and weight management.
What are the side-effects of Acomplia?
Side effects observed during the trial on Acomplia in the treatment of obesity include nausea and vomiting. This compelled 19% of patients to quit the trial and another 13 % to take placebo.
