Medicative uses

Testosterone, an androgenic anabolic steroid hormone that naturally occurs in the body, treats certain breast cancer types. This medication is applied to replace hormone in males who are unable to naturally generate adequate volumes of testosterone.

Usage

This should be taken orally or as directed by the doctor, normally in a once, or twice, daily schedule. Andriol capsule should be swallowed whole and preferably after meals to reduce the chance of any resultant stomach disorder. It should also be taken at the same time everyday to become a routine habit. Unnecessarily increasing the dose without consulting the attending physician is not advisable as it will not give any desired benefit but increase risks of adverse side effects.

Side effects

Mild stomach upset, acne outbreak or intermittent headache may occur while the body tries to adjust to the introduction of this medication. Other common side effects could be undesirable increase in facial, body hair growth, change in sexual desire, anxiety, increased urination, sleeplessness and even depression. Males have experienced enlargement of breasts and increased frequency coupled with added duration in sexual arousal. The doctor needs to be consulted if symptoms persist or cause tension. Further, it is necessary to alert the doctor in case of skin rash, pale stool, dark urine, yellowing of the eyes or skin, vomiting, muscle aches, difficult urination, breathing trouble, swelling hands or feet, etc. For other effects not mentioned, consulting the doctor or pharmacist is advised.

Precautions

Before commencing treatment, it is necessary that the attending doctor is made aware of all pre-existing diseases, if any, in particular, prostrate or male breast cancer, enlarged prostate, kidney diseases, liver problems, drug allergies and heart disease. For treatment of females, use of this drug during pregnancy is forbidden. If pregnancy occurs or even suspected, the doctor must be immediately alerted. No breast feeding should be practiced while using this medicine. Symptoms of virilization like deepening of voice, acne breakout, growth of facial hair, clitoral enlargement or menstrual irregularity in females need to be monitored or the doctor consulted promptly if such symptoms occur. Usage by children should always be undertaken with great caution for this drug has the potential to bring about undesirable effects inhibiting normal growth. Geriatric males run a greater risk of enlarging prostates or encouraging prostate cancer by ingesting this drug.

Potential for drug reactions

The attending doctor or OTC dispenser needs to be advised on any prescription medication to be taken, including insulin, blood thinners (e.g.,warfarin), other steroids, diabetes drugs or cyclosporine. Commencing or suspending usage of any medicine without consulting the doctor or pharmacist is not advised.

Overdose

In case of overdose or suspected overdose, approach the local toxicity control center or hospital emergency facility immediately.

Laboratory tests are periodically required during this medication to monitor any ill effects or take prevent measures.

Missed dose compensation

Every dose must be taken at the same particular scheduled time. In case of a missed dose, it may be taken when remembered but with sufficient gap, and never near the scheduled time of the next dose, or skip the missed dose altogether, resuming dosage as per next schedule without double- dosing.

Storage

This medication must be stored at room temperature ie. 59 and 86 degrees F/ 15 and 30 degrees C, away from heat, bright light or excessive moisture. It is not to be stored in the bathroom. Like all medication, keep this medicine out of children’s reach
