Alprostadil is used for:
Treatment of erectile dysfunctions in men.
Alprostadil, a prostaglandin (PGE-1) enabled the relaxation of certain penile muscles and widens blood vessels, thus increasing the flow of blood into the penis which helps in causing a full erection. When the drug’s effect wears off in time, blood flow returns to normal and the erection withdraws.
Restrictions for use of Alprostadil:
- In case of known allergies to any ingredient in Alprostadil.
- In case of existing ailments related to blood like sickle cell anemia, leukemia or sickle cell trait, bone marrow conditions like multiple myeloma, or any other problem that could increase the risk of priapism (abnormally long, painful erection).
- In case of the presence of any penile implant, deformities in the penis or other abnormal penile conditions like fibrosis of the penis or Peyronie disease.
- In case of any physical restrictions on sexual intercourse
- Consult the doctor or health care provider promptly if any of the above should apply.
Inform the healthcare provider in case of any existing medical conditions, particularly if those mentioned below, apply:
- In case of pregnancy, or plan for pregnancy, or id presently breast-feeding
- In case already using any prescription or OTC medication, herbal formulation, or dietary additive.
- In case of known allergies to medicines, foods, or other items of consumption
- If there is inflammation or infection in the penis, kidney complaints, urination difficulties (e.g., inflamed or narrowed urethra), or there is any history of unduly long, or painful erections

- In case of having any blood conducted disease like hepatitis or HIV
Some medications may interact adversely with Alprostadil. Inform the health care provider if already on a course of other medicines, particularly like the under mentioned: Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin) or heparin, by which the risk of bleeding may be aggravated.

Alprostadil is meant for injection directly into the body of the penis for producing the desired erection. The health care provider can demonstrate the best way to use Alprostadil. Alprostadil should begin to take effect in about 5 to 20 minutes after its injection, which lasts for 30 to 60 minutes.
Alprostadil should not be used more than once in a 24-hour span or over 3 doses in a week, unless first clearing it with the attending doctor.
In the case of not using a dose of Alprostadil, and still planning intending sexual activity, use it at the earliest opportunity or as may be advised by the doctor.

Using Alprostadil may result in dizziness. This reaction may be more severe if taken with alcohol, or some other medications. Apply caution when using Alprostadil. Verify the extent of reactions, if any before driving or undertaking potentially risky tasks.
Alprostadil is NOT to be used more than the dose recommended; changing dosage unless cleared by the doctor if not recommended.
In case if discomfort or pain when having an erection, or having one beyond 4 hours (priapism), consult the doctor. If not attended to promptly, it may develop into serious sexual problems, like impotence. Consulting the doctor promptly in such situation is strongly advised.
Alprostadil is not a cover against spreading sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) like HIV, or diseases transferred through blood, like hepatitis B. Using other barriers, like condoms, if case of carrying STD or diseases carried through blood.
In case of partner’s inadequate natural vaginal lubrication, or pain sensations in the vagina, consult with the doctor. Using a water-based lubricant during sexual intercourse may give relief.
When on a course of Alprostadil, a schedule of monitoring through tests by the doctor is necessary and therefore, ensuring doctor and lab appointments are kept, is necessary.
The elderly must apply caution when using Alprostadil due to their higher sensitivity to its effects.
Pregnant or breast-feeding mothers should be aware possibility of harm to the fetus out of using Alprostadil is unknown. It is also unknown whether Alprostadil if available in breast milk. Therefore, women should never take Alprostadil under any circumstances.
Possible adverse reactions of Alprostadil:
All medications carry the risk of causing side effects, but most users have none, or insignificant, drug reactions. Consult the doctor if case any of the under mentioned common side effects occur, or persist:
Moderate loss of blood from the spot of injection; any light genital pain sensation.
Obtain immediate medical aid if any of the following severe side effects occur:
Severe allergic reactions (rash; itching; hives; difficulty in breathing; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, and tongue, or tightness in the chest); abnormal ejaculation; blood in the urine or change in urine volume, blood oozing from the penis tip; chest pain; dizziness; curving of the erect penis; fainting; worsening genital pain; fast or irregular heartbeat; new, painful or prolonged erection; lumps, swelling, redness, inflammation, tender or numbness, discoloration of the penis, unusual sensation, severe or persistent pain, severe or unstoppable bleeding or bruising around the injection spot, swelling, swelling of the leg veins, redness of the injection spot; white patches, penile discharge.

In case of overdose:

Storage of Alprostadil:
Alprostadil is to be stored at 77 degrees F/25 degrees C. Short storage between 59 and 86 degrees F/15 and 30 degrees C, is permissible. The drug is not to be frozen. Preserve from heat, moisture, direct light, not stored in the bathroom. Keep Alprostadil beyond children’s reach, and pets.
