Along with physical therapy and rest, Norgesic muscle relaxant is used to treat painful muscle conditions and injuries. The way orphenadrine acts is not clearly understood, but it seems that the medicine has analgesic properties. Norgesic medicines do not play any role in directly relaxing the skeletal muscles in humans. However, this medicine is no alternative to other treatments, exercise or rest that had been prescribed by a doctor for the medical problem.
Norgesic muscle relaxant is used in the treatment of skeletal muscle rigidity and tension and muscle injuries. It is also used in the treatment of degenerative soft tissue disease of the neck, joints and lower back and other reasons of muscle spasms and in case of prolapsed discs. The medicine helps in increasing the action of the opioid analgesics that helps in reducing severe as well as moderate neuropathic pain. It is also effective in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.
Norgesic has an atropine like action on the medulla and on the cerebral motor centers in the brain and helps in reducing the skeletal muscle spasm. The medicine does act directly as a skeletal muscle relaxant. The relief that is caused in skeletal muscle spasms might be due to the analgesic properties in the medicine. Orphenadrine also shows some postganglionic anticholinergic effects and some antihistaminic and local anesthetic action. The antihistaminic function of orphenadrine is much lower than that of diphenhydramine; in contrast to the tranquilizing effect of diphenhydramine, orphenadrine produces little CNS stimulation.
How to take Norgesic
This medication is taken with a glass full of water (8 ounces or 240 ml), if your doctor has not prescribed some other way. Make sure that you do not lie down on the bed for almost half an hour after taking the medicine. The recommended dosage of Norgesic for adults is 1 to 2 tablets taken thrice or four times daily, one tablet in the morning and another in the evening. The dose of the medicine will be decided depending upon your medical health condition and on your response to the therapy. Continue the medicine the same way as it is prescribed, neither less nor more nor for longer period than recommended. On doing any such thing, there are no chances of getting cured faster, only chances of side effects will increase.
If you miss a dose, take the missed dose the moment you remember. But if it is almost time for the next dose by then, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular routine. But never take a double dose of the medicine.
